We raken de wereld aan en door die aanraking scheppen we afstand tussen onszelf en onze omgeving, of we gaan daardoor juist hechte, intieme relaties aan. Maar onze tastzin verloopt steeds meer via technologie, waardoor de manier waarop we onszelf en de ander ervaren verandert. Begüm Erciyas onderzoekt het zintuig door zich te richten op de handen.
In Hands Made is alles gericht op de eigen handen van elke bezoeker. Afgezonderd van de rest van het lichaam, maar heel dichtbij elkaar, vormen ze de focus van een mogelijke voorstelling van het verleden en de toekomst van de hand, van handwerk en de tastzin. Waar hebben deze handen zich mee bezig gehouden en wat gaan ze nog doen in de toekomst? Wie of wat zullen ze aanraken?
Hands Made is een uitnodiging om anders te gaan denken over onze omgang met onze handen. Om ons hun veranderende rol in het verleden voor te stellen en hun rol in een toekomstige samenleving.
We touch the world, and by touching, we distance ourselves from our surroundings, or create relationships of proximity and intimacy. Increasingly, however, our touch is mediated by technologies that change the way we experience ourselves and others. Begüm Erciyas explores the faculty of touch by focusing on the hands.
In Hands Made, the visitors’ own hands take center stage. Separated from the rest of the body, yet in intimate proximity to each other, they will be the focal point of a speculation on the past and future of hands, of handiwork, and the sense of touch. What have these hands been busy with and what will they do in the future? Who or what will they touch?
Hands Made invites us to rethink our relation to our hands; to imagine their transformation throughout history and their role in a society to come.
